Why does my child need a physical exam and routine pediatric visits?
Children need regular physical exams by a pediatrician in order to evaluate your child’s health, monitor and track your child’s growth and development over the years, provide for scheduled vaccinations, and discuss any questions you or your child may have about their health or development. Dr. Eliézer Hernández and our team at Yeled Shalom Pediatric clinic recommend annual physicals for children in order to ensure your child is growing properly and does not have any new symptoms or undiagnosed medical issues or concerns.
For newborns or infants, see our information about newborns for a recommended schedule of pediatric visits.
What can I expect during my child’s physical exam?
When your child visits Yeled Shalom Pediatric Clinic for an annual physical exam, our pediatrician reviews your child’s personal and family medical history, discusses any changes or concerns you have about their general health, development, or behaviors. After answering any questions you may have, Eagle Pass pediatrician, Eliézer Hernández, will perform a physical exam of your child’s major organs, eyes, lungs, and heart. Dr. Hernández will also evaluate your child’s skin, muscles, joints, and takes weight and height measurements to track proper growth and development. Additionally your child’s spine will be evaluated for curvatures or other possible abnormalities.
During annual physicals, all necessary vaccinations will also be provided according to the recommended vaccination schedule.
While doctor’s appointments can be intimidating for many children and parents, our team at Yeled Shalom Pediatric Clinic do everything we can to ensure a comfortable environment and informative time with our pediatrician. Our entire medical team is fluent in English and Spanish in order to ensure that every patient and parent or guardian will receive the best possible pediatric care and communication from our staff.
Why does my child need immunizations/vaccinations?
Immunizations or vaccinations are a very important part of protecting your child against contagious disease. Children begin receiving vaccinations at a very young age because their immune system is still developing and not yet able to protect them from various serious and life-threatening diseases.
At Yeled Shalom Pediatric Clinic, our team of pediatric medical professionals will determine what vaccinations are recommended for your child based on their overall health and age. We offer all necessary vaccinations in our Eagle Pass pediatric clinic, including:
Polio
Mumps
Measles
Tetanus
Hepatitis
Whooping cough
We also recommend that your child receive an annual flu shot to reduce the risk of contracting influenza and developing severe flu complications. For more information about the flu, please read our questions and answers about the flu and children HERE.
We do want to assure all our patients and parents or guardians that vaccinations are both safe and effective. We do recognize that in some cases, children with allergies may not be able to receive certain vaccinations. This is why it is so important for your child to be thoroughly evaluated by our pediatrician with routine physicals and exams in order to have a comprehensive understanding and plan for their optimal healthcare.
