What happens during a newborn visit?

Newborn visits to the pediatrician are an important part of your child’s early health and development. When you bring your baby to Yeled Shalom Pediatric Clinic, our board-certified pediatrician, Eliézer Hernández, MD, PA, will evaluate your child’s growth and development, provide scheduled vaccinations, and discuss any questions you may have about your child’s health. Your visit with our pediatrician at our Eagle Pass office will include an assessment of the following:

  • Height

  • Weight

  • Heart rate

  • Skin health

  • Body temperature

Because healthy development and growth in the earliest years of life is so important, your newborn should visit the pediatrician every two to three months. The recommended schedule for pediatric visits is listed below:

ROUTINE HEALTH MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

  • Newborn hospital follow up

  • 2 weeks

  • 2 months

  • 4 months

  • 6 months

  • 9 months

  •  12 months

  • 15 months

  • 18 months

  • 24 months

As your child continues to grow, our pediatric assessments will be adapted to your child’s physical and mental stages, and our comprehensive care will include evaluations of development, behavior and certain milestones.

Why is it important for my newborn to visit the pediatrician?

Regular pediatric visits beginning at the newborn stage and continuing through childhood and into adolescence allows the pediatrician and medical team the opportunity to identify any potential health issues or conditions as early as possible so that effective and timely treatment can be provided. Our goal is to provide your child with every care, tool and treatment he or she needs in order to thrive.

If your child has a pre-existing health condition or is diagnosed with a physical or developmental condition, our pediatrician at Yeled Shalom Pediatric Clinic will be able to create an appropriate treatment plan to manage the condition and provide you and your child with the care and resources you need.

Newborns are especially also susceptible to various illnesses because their immune systems have not yet fully developed. If your newborn develops any concerning symptoms or apparently is not feeling well, our team can provide custom treatment plans to alleviate symptoms and address the illness, which are uniquely appropriate for the infancy stage.

And finally, the newborn stage is full of physical and developmental changes for the baby, which can be overwhelming and exhausting for parents and caregivers. Our team of medical professionals and our board-certified pediatrician will partner with you throughout the earliest months of your child’s life, answer questions, address concerns and provide the medical expertise you need to provide the best care and environment for your newborn.

Will my baby need vaccinations?

Newborns can receive vaccinations, and we highly recommend receiving several vaccinations starting soon after birth and continuing through childhood. Vaccinations are important for protecting your child’s health and reducing their risk for health complications relating to chronic diseases, like measles and whooping cough.
